Welcome to the official blog of OZ Expeditions. We're a group of friends, family, and adventurers based in Northwest Arkansas with a shared passion for exploring the rugged beauty, community, and culture of the Ozarks region and beyond.
The Ozark Region
The Ozark region, also called the Ozark Plateau, spans southern Missouri, northern Arkansas, and parts of Oklahoma and Kansas. Firstly, it covers about 47,000 square miles of rugged hills, deep valleys, and clear rivers. Next, its karst landscape, with caves and springs, forms from dissolved limestone. Then, elevations rise from 1,000 feet to over 2,500 feet in the Boston Mountains. Finally, its oak and pine forests attract hikers, fishers, and nature lovers to places like Mark Twain National Forest.
Historically, the Ozarks blend Native American roots with early settler traditions from the Upland South. Initially, tribes like the Osage and Cherokee thrived on its resources. Later, Scotch-Irish settlers arrived, bringing folk music and storytelling that still linger. Meanwhile, towns like Branson now draw tourists, while Fayetteville grows as a cultural hub. Nevertheless, the region’s rural charm endures alongside its misty hills and winding rivers.
